Keep Your Airgun in Peak Condition
Owning an airgun brings great joy – the feeling of a smooth, accurate shot, the power and excitement of firing, and the satisfaction of success during target practice or small game hunting. However, like any valued possession, proper care is required to keep your airgun performing at its best.
Why Proper Airgun Care Matters
Airguns depend on precise mechanics and quality craftsmanship to operate accurately. Over time, general wear and tear, exposure to moisture, dust, tiny deposits left by pellets, and rust can degrade performance. A clean, lubricated, and protected airgun will provide years of consistent, high-quality shooting.
Regular Care Keeps Airguns in Top Shape
Barrel
The barrel is the most crucial component of an airgun to keep clean. Firing pellets leads to the accumulation of lead, copper, and carbon deposits. However, these can be effectively removed using a felt pellet combined with an oil-based airgun barrel cleaner. For more stubborn buildup, solvent-soaked pellets can be used.
Breech and Channels
The barrel breech, pellet loading channel, and exposed mechanisms collect firing residue, dust, and corrosion when moisture condenses inside the gun. Use a degreasing spray and a soft brush and cloth to remove grime monthly. Additionally, cotton buds can reach tight spaces.
Stock
The firing mechanism and barrel’s wooden or synthetic stock should be polished and sealed annually. Metal parts can be buffed to shine.
Storage
Use a gun slip or foam- or cloth-lined hard case to prevent scratches and dust. Keep the airgun dry and out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
Lubricants Keep Airguns Running Smoothly
Airguns require lubrication of all moving components and seals to prevent wear, jams, loss of power, and inaccuracy. After cleaning, a drop or two of airgun oil on pivot points, springs, pistons, triggers, and barrel hinges keeps the firing sequence smooth.
Protect Metal Surfaces From Rust and Corrosion
Unprotected metal parts like barrels, breech faces, triggers, screws, and sights will eventually show signs of corrosion from fingerprints, moisture, salts, and environmental chemicals. A preventative spray wax coats surfaces to resist rust and tarnish between regular cleanings. For guns used in damp or salty air conditions, apply an anti-rust protectant that displaces moisture.
Quality Airgun Care Products From Top Brands
By using quality tools and products like those listed above and practising consistent cleaning and preventative maintenance, your high performance airgun will deliver decades of shooting enjoyment.
