Short version for the busy: beautifully made in the UK. Easy to fit. Robust. Great value. Great service from The Wolfman.

Longer version: bought after asking Owen’s advice on two bolt vs four for a Hawke Vantage 2-7×32 AO IR (14211) on a Weihrauch 99S in .177.

Tho’ a springer, the HW99S recoil is hardly savage and the (overlooked?) 2-7×32 is at least 200g lighter than its 3-9×40 or x50 stablemates, has a wider field of view, and is cheaper. And the two-bolt design better fits the lightweight rifle I wanted to build. I have US BKL on an Endurance SF on my HW100S, and while I do prefer the recessed-clamp bolt, BKL don’t offer a recoil pin – and cost twice as much.

I cleaned the dovetail, clamp bolts etc with mineral white spirit and buffed dry before assembling. Spirit level on the square top of the barrel (checked against the top of the lower mounts on the receiver), reticle vertical checked against a plumbline. Finger tight on the mounts gave enough play for fine-tuning. Everything tightened smoothly and evenly and feels rock solid. I’ll repost in the unlikely event it doesn’t shoot as expected. Medium mounts on the HW99S give the 2-7×32 AO IR clearance for the supplied bikini caps without being excessive (bell external diameter is 47mm). Hawke screw-in ones will clear however you decide to orientate the hinges. The HW99S fitted iron sights’ in no way obstruct the scope, so as I’d zeroed them, I’ve left them on.

A shout out for The Wolfman service. Sound advice and their FREE delivery arrived the same day as the £4.50 ’24-hour’ (which was actually 36) postage on the ‘scope (from elsewhere). That combination’s rare these days, therefore praiseworthy. Chuffed to bits. Hope this helps inform others.

Update. Scope zeroed. When I got to the range I found that to get my optimal eye relief I needed to move the mounts back by about an inch and a half from where had originally felt right sat at the kitchen table. Less than a minute to ease the dovetail clamps, reposition the recoil pin from the foremost of the three receiver-top holes to the rearmost of them, and retighten.

In case helpful to others, while some fellow club shooters run 24x, 7x magnification gave me a clear view of the fall of shot at 25 yards. 5x gives a clear target image and wider field of view in the field. I’ve also fitted Hawke screw-in flip-up end caps with no clearance problems whatsoever. No more ‘now where did I put the bikini caps?’.

50 shots since zeroing and no scope creep. The HW99S, Hawke Vantage 2-7×32 AO IR and SportsMatch TO2C mounts really do all complement each other beautifully. A terrific combination of functionality and form.

Still five stars but 9 months and 1,000+ shots in I did begin to get some scope creep rearward, so in all fairness the ask might have been a bit much for a single clamp design. And I’m shooting off a block on a bench (Yorkshire rules) which is quite harsh. Given the quality I didn’t hesitate in replacing them with Sportsmatch TCO4 which has twice the clamping area. You might be able to use TCO2 on a softer-tuned springer, or handheld, and definitely on a PCP, but TCO4 de-risks it.
